Hugs Process

November 2023

Hugs Administrator:    YOU??

  1. Oversees Hugs program.
  2. Keeps database current.
  3. Writes Hugs update for newsletter.
  4. Speaks on behalf of the program giving Hugs updates at Guild membership meetings.
  5. Arranges with Guild Vice President to have Hugs workshops or speakers as needed.
  6. Oversees storage area and controls access as needed.
  7. Works with Team Coordinators to set annual goals.
  8. Works with Team Coordinators to select annual challenge.
  9. Works with Team Coordinators to ensure they have the resources to complete their teams’ work.
  10. Arranges purchases, transportation, and storage of batting rolls, as needed.

Incoming Donations Team:

  1. Kathy McClung is the incoming non-monetary donation coordinator. She will screen these donations for appropriateness for quilt tops or bags.  She will also determine whether to forward to Kits Team or sell, as appropriate.
  2. The Guild Treasurer will accept monetary donations on behalf of both Hugs and the Guild. She will place the money in the appropriate bank account and annotate it in the Treasurer’s Report.

Kits Team Coordinator:  Zena Larosa

  1. Leads the Kits Team to produce kits for Hugs quilt tops.
  2. Picks the pattern and fabric for kits.
  3. Works with other team coordinators and the Hugs Administrator to choose a pattern for the annual Hugs challenge. Creates kits for the challenge.
  4. Brings kits to the meetings for members to choose kits to create quilt tops for Hugs. Keeps track of who is taking kits.
  5. Accepts completed quilt tops, notifies Hugs Administrator to update database.
  6. Arranges for quilt tops to go to the Backing Team Coordinator.

Backing Team Coordinator:  Peggy Anderson

  1. Leads the backing team to produce (piece) backings for each quilt top.
  2. Ensures there is enough fabric to prepare backings for quilt tops.
  3. Prepares backing for each quilt top.
  4. Arranges for transport of the quilt top and backing to the longarmer.
  5. May need to work with Binding & Label Team Coordinator to put binding and label with the quilt package.

Longarmer:

  1. We are fortunate to have several people volunteer to longarm our quilts.

  2. If you are a longarmer and would like to volunteer to assist with this effort, please let the Hugs Administrator know of your interest.
  3. The longarmer quilts Hugs projects.
  4. Works with Backing and Binding & Label Teams to work out best process to ensure binding and label are with the quilt, prior to transport to whomever is finishing the quilt.

Binding & Labels Team Coordinator:  YOU??

  1. Cuts binding for quilts.
  2. Matches binding to quilt top.
  3. Sews binding together to size for each quilt top (lx2 + wx2 + 12” = Binding length)
  4. Creates a label for each quilt.
  5. Puts binding and label in with each quilt (determine the best way timing for this step)
  6. Transports the quilts to whomever is sewing the binding and label to the quilt. At the current time (November 2023), it is Lyn and Mary Willis.

Out-going Donations Team Coordinator:  Christine Koenen

  1. Receives completed quilts and bags.
  2. Advises the Hugs Administrator of completion so the database can be updated.
  3. Keeps completed quilts and bags until disbursement to the appropriate charity.
  4. Maintains relationships with the charities the Guild has voted to support.
  5. Ensures we have enough of the appropriate quilts and bags for the agencies we support.
  6. Keeps the Hugs Administrator informed of quilt and bag distribution so an accurate report can be given to the Guild Membership.

 

Franken Batting Maker:  YOU??

  1. Gets batting pieces from Hugs longarmers and sews them together to create quilt size batting. Size to be determined by Hugs Administrator.
  2. Ensures delivery of sewn batting to longarmers, as needed.

Bags Kit Coordinator:  Luci Kirschbaum??

  1. Makes bag kits for Hugs.
  2. Ensures kits are available at the Guild Membership Meetings for those who want to construct bags for Hugs.
  3. Completed bags are given to the Out-going Donations Team Coordinator

 

Hugs Quilts for Kids and Adults

The Covington Quilter’s Guild provides quilts for children and adults with adversities.  In 2005 we began tracking our gifts.  To date we’ve made and distributed 6074 quilts or ‘Hugs’!! 

Our Annual Quilt Show and Annual Raffle Quilt provides the funds to help us continue this endeavor.

 Below is a list of recipients:

American Airlines  - Seattle Snowball Express

 Quilts are given to children who have lost a parent in the military.  American Airlines sponsors this event at the airport.  The children are taken to a fun

destination for a week.

Children’s Hospital - Seattle

Children ages 1—18 receiving chemo at Children’s, Fred Hutchinson and Madigan Hospitals.  Washington State has the highest incidence of children’s cancer than any other state.

Covington and Auburn Multi Care - Oncology Dept for Adults

 Quilts are given to adults receiving chemo and radiation.

Jennifer Beach Foundation  - Covington, WA

 Quilts are given to children learning to break the cycle of abuse.  The quilts are part of the tools that are used in the training of the children.

PICC—Pediatric Interim Care Center—Kent WA

 Isolette covers are provided for newborns who are addicted to Meth, Heroin and other drugs.  PICC is the only facility of it’s kind in the US. 

 Ryther Child Center—Lake City, WA

 Children ages 6—18.  Ryther is a live in care facility for abused and emotionally traumatized children.  Each child gets to choose their own quilt.

Valley Medical Center  - Breast Cancer Unit, Renton, WA

 Quilts are given to patients receiving chemotherapy.

Valley Medical Center – NICU-Intensive Care Unit for Newborns, Renton, WA

 Quilts are given to newborns with life threatening problems or premature babies.

Vine Maple Place  -  Maple Valley, WA

 Quilts are given to displaced families as a symbol of hope for the future.
